Many thanks to Mary who hosted a lovely gathering last night, and thanks to Fiona who brought amazing cupcakes that had to compete for calorie budgets with Ashley's pistachio cake that was divine. I hope my clothes fit on my upcoming trip.
Tana French is usually an author that delivers punchy, interesting books with a great plot and complex characters. The Keeper is not one of those, at least not in the opinion of most of us. Some loved the dialect, particularly on the audio book version, others found it off-putting.
The plot was languid by comparison, and so not everyone finished it. I got stuck in the prior book in the series (The Hunter) and gave up on moving on to the next one, which is unusual as I generally love Tana French.
For those who want to give her another shot, recommendations included The Witch Elm, Into the Woods, which was her first novel, and Faithful Place. Be warned, some of them are also depressing but boy can she write.
And so on we go to October. We are headed back to literary fiction, Elizabeth Strout's newest called The Things We Never Say. I have read it and it was quite good, better than the most recent ones (in my opinion.) The date is October 12 and we will meet at Fiona's, thank you Fiona!
